A few years back a new book arrived in our library @ work
Title---A fly in the Cathedral

A ripping good yarn over the above mentioned working in Rutherford's Lab in Cambridge

It gives an interesting insight to research in this era / high voltage arena and how hard it really was.
enjoy

Here's the Amazon link, not that I like dealing with them that much.

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss? ... al&x=0&y=0

I ordered one. The book "Progress in Fast Neutron Physics" has a talk by Sir John Cockroft that sold me on anything he'd be involved in writing.
The kind of guy you wish you could meet, just to see how his mind works, how he approaches things. Sometimes learning that is more important than any specific knowledge the guy has.

This was a compendium of the "Proceedings of the International Conference on Fast Neutron Physics, held at Rice University in Feb 1963, in tribute to Tom Bonner.
It has a library of congress catalog card number: 63-18849 and it a gem itself -- and priced like a gem if you can find one at all.
Posting as just me, not as the forum owner. Everything I say is "in my opinion" and YMMV -- which should go for everyone without saying.
